Learning How To Use Frames...

Many people when they start out doing HTML Coding, usually opt for Frames, but a lot get mixed up when trying to create them, so here I'll try my best to help those people whom have trouble in creating frames and targetting their links within those frames.

In Example 1, you'll find a Basic Frame, made up of 2 columns, one 20%, the other 80% of the screen.

Ok to explain exactly what you need for Example 1 Frameset to actually fully work, you'll need 3 html pages, yes that's 3, the first one would normally be called something in the way of Index.html, and the other two being called anything else you prefer, but for now we'll call ours, Index.html, 1st.html and 2nd.html

Ok inside Index.html page, you would actually have the Frameset Code from Example 1.1 only inside it.

The 1st.html page, would normally consist of a Navigational Menu, to guide your visitors to your other page links, the 2nd.html would normally be your Main pages, i.e. your Homepage.

Ok done that? Well let's move onto how to link your Frames

You've done your 3 html pages, but they're in no way linked unless you add a link to either 1st.html or 2nd.html, either of which you'll probably want the link to open up inside your 2nd.html page, to do this let's say you've added a link inside your 1st.html page, you would then have to target that link, I've shown how in Example 1.2

There are 3 other ways to target your links,

target="_blank"
This opens up a completely new window

target="_self"
This opens up in the same window as the link

target="_top"
This opens up on top of another window.

There are a few more Basic Frames Examples on my Frames Examples Page, use them if you wish.
