Learning How To Use FTP...

FTP(File Transfer Protocol), is a way to quickly upload and download files on the Internet.

To download a file to your system, you need to run a ftp client application, that connects to the ftp server and request a file from a particular directory or folder. Files can be uploaded to the ftp server, if an appropriate access has been granted. Using ftp, you are only limited by the ammount of space you are allocated on the server.

Ok first thing you need to know is, does your new WEB HOST support FTP clients, if they do, then download a free one from the internet, WS_FTP95 LE is a good free FTP client, I know because I use it myself, you may if you wish, download another one called CUTE FTP, but it's SHAREWARE, not FREE!!

If you do get WS_FTP95 LE, then it's easy to set up, but first you'll require the FTP address from your new WEB HOST. Once you have this address from your WEB HOST, then you need to configure your FTP client, so let's say you've decided to download WS_FTP95 LE, ok first open it, 2 boxes will appear, a large one, and a smaller one named Session Properties on top of the large one. This Session Properties box is your main details box. You need to click the General tab first if you're not already at the General window. Then left click once into the Profile Name: box, and type your User Name(the one you signed up as with your new Web Host), then inside the Host Name/Address: box, type the FTP address your new Web Host gave you. The Host Type: box, you may set this to Automatic Detect (I use Serv-U), you do this by clicking onto the small arrow inside that box and scrolling to the service you require. Then type your User Name into the User ID: box, then type into the Password: box, your password you got from your new Web Host, making sure you have also checked the Save Password box to the right of this. You may leave both ACCOUNT & COMMENT boxes clear (I did), then you need to click the START UP tab, this is where you need to setup your directory, from where you'll be uploading your files from, such as C:\ make sure you set these to your liking. Once that's done, move onto the next 2 tabs, Advanced & Firewall, it's up to you to set these to what you prefer, as each persons is different. Then once you have everything set to what you need, click Apply then OK, then you'll connect, oh one thing first, please make sure your firewall isn't blocking any servers, because this will not allow your FTP client to connect to your Web Host.

Once it has connected you'll see your files/folders on your hard drive in the box to the left, the box to the right is blank for now, but will indeed be filled by the files you upload to it.

Ok remember that Index.html you created earlier? Well find it, via the small box up top on the left, click the small arrow inside it, and then to proceed to any directory, do the same in the larger box on the left, double left clicking to open any particular folder, to find any files you require to upload to your Web Host.

Once you've found your file you're looking for, in this case Index.html, left click onto it once, and then you'll need to locate --> which is in the centre of those 2 large boxes. Left click onto --> once and your file will then upload automatically, once it appears in the large box on the right handside, it's successfully uploaded to your Web Host.

Now to check that it's worked correctly, go to your site, include the Index.html at the end of the address of your Host like this... www.psend.com/users/impetus66/index.html and you'll then see it, of course you'll just see a blank page, because you've yet to place some HTML Coding in between your <body></body> tags, but once you have, this is where you'll see it, and when you create anymore html pages & upload to your Web Host.
