Also, some ignition systems need resistance in the circuit to force
the voltage to build high enough to deliver a clean hot spark. These
systems can lose much of their potential by installing copper core
wires instead of resistance or suppression wires. The resistance has
the effect of keeping the voltage bottled up in the coil until it
can't be held any longer at which the current flows at a higher
voltage to give that clean hot spark you're looking for.
I humbly disagree. Circuit resistance has no effect until current flows which is determined by the spark gap and all sorts of other parameters. Resistance wire was introduced to minimize RF interference to TV sets and FM radios in the late 50's due to a Federal regulation. Doubt if you can find a racing vehicle with resistance plug wires unless its to help the internal electronics live longer. It is not as simple as that, there is resistance wire (like the old carbon conductors from the 1950's to today used to suppress radio noise) and inductive, or spirally wound, wires (most of the performance wires are spirally wound). Inductive wires have resistance, and high resistance on these wires is not meccessarily a bad thing. Look at the FAQs for more information on this little understood subject. And, yes, there are race autos driving around everywhere from SCCA to NASCAR Winston Cup to Le Mans with "resistance" in the wires. "Zero" resistance wires really do not work on modern engines since they intefere with the engines electronics, such as ignition or fuel injection, and some modern ignition systems actually do rely on some resistance in the wires to work properly. |
