Welcome to our small village in the Austrian-Swiss Alps. It's the year 1308, and you're invited to take part in our special archery competition. It should be fun. It will be challenging. At day's end, our overall tournament champion will be declared, as will the first “Archery Champion of Glenn Linn” (must be a gentle of the shire), and there will be recognition of the winner of each portion of the shoot.
The Basics:
• The tournament will be shot on Saturday. We will shoot it twice: Once in late-morning and once in mid-afternoon; the actual start times to be announced.
• Only the highest score from each individual portion will count toward the over-all tournament and shire championships, whether shot in the morning or the afternoon. There will be no separate morning or afternoon championships.
• A tie in the scores for overall tournament champion and/or shire champion will be settled by a shoot at a medieval traditional target yet to be determined.
• A winner will be announced for each individual portion within the overall tournament. The winner, or winners, of tied-portions will be determined by our shire's archery marshalls.
• Due to layout and safety limitations, all archers must shoot while accompanied by, and as prescribed by, our shire's archery marshalls and authorized visiting marshalls.
• Practice shooting alongside the Royal Round field will be offered for a limited time prior to the morning and afternoon tournament shoots. Practice shooting after the tournaments will be at the discretion of the archery marshall-in-charge.
• A few loaner bows and arrows will be available, and basic lessons will be offered at the practice field. However, the “Blinded Archer” shoot is allowed only for experienced archers who can safely nock an arrow while blindfolded.
Please note: The descriptions below are of inanimate targets only – no actual animals, poachers, villagers, fish, human heads, or flesh-eating dragons will be allowed to be shot during the competition. All other descriptions, terms, and tournament criteria are subject to change by the archery autocrat/marshall-in-charge.
The “Royal Round” (projected maximum, 120 points+)
We humbly extend you an invitation to take part in a standard “Royal Round” as we begin the tournament:
6 arrows at each target: |
20 yards
|
(one target at a time) |
30 yards
|
|
40 yards
|
maximum number of arrows: |
20 yards, 30 seconds timed |
Fish In The Round (maximum, 30 points)
Our feast menu cries for variety of a certain scale, and, yes, it's as easy as “shooting fish in a barrel.”
5 arrows |
3 targets 10 points per target |
The “William Tell” (maximum, 30 points)
The Habsburg emperors in Salzburg are continuing to attempt the subjugation of our people despite an “unfortunate encounter” six months ago of their enforcer, Albrect Gessler, with William Tell of Uri. The newly appointed Vogt of Altdorf has come to the village – Reinhard Koch is determined to avenge Gessler's death, and Tell's defiance, and vows to “Git'R Done,” or words to that effect. As with Tell, you have to shoot the apple off your kid's head or you will be executed. Likewise, you may draw two arrows
– one for the apple, and, if you miss, the other for Koch. [For your convenience, we supply the kid and Koch. Don't shoot poorly, though some executions may be deferred.]:
1st shot: | apple | + 30 points |
| kid's head | – 30 points
| | both missed | – 15 points |
| |
|
2nd shot (only if 1st shot misses apple): | |
| | Koch's head + 15 points |
The “King's Woods” (maximum, 30 points)
We are to hunt game for the evening's feast in what we locals still call the “King's Woods” (before his disposal last year by the Habsburg's of Austria). Look lively...we shoot poachers, not villagers:
6 arrows: | one shot per target; some may have a time restriction |
| each target must be shot in accordance with our sequence |
| each shot must be from a prescribed posture or placement of our choice (such as while standing or kneeling at a certain spot, or from around a particular tree or other obstruction) |
8 targets | + 5 points per “correct” target |
| – 10 points per “wrong” target |
The “Blinded Archer” (maximum, 30 points)
[For experienced archers who can easily nock an arrow while blindfolded. The populace will be encouraged to offer vigorous “verbal coaching” from a marked placement behind the shooting line.]
A scavenging dragon, patrolling the skies overhead, has heard our clamor. Hungrily seeking it's own “little feast,” it has landed. Save the village. Easy. Except, it's not...you take your stance and prepare to draw your first arrow, you are blinded [via our specially clouded glasses, provided] by it's vapid breath. Be very scared. Listen...its heartbeat...it's voice...it speaks...shoot!:
6 arrows | Dragon's body | 2 points |
| Dragon's head | 5 points |
| Dragon's heart | 10 points |
